Taking cue from champions

International track and fi eld Olympic Champions’ Prizes event held in Minsk

The tournament, initiated by the Belarusian Athletic Federation and Olympic champions Yulia Nesterenko, Tatiana Ledovskaya, Yanina Karolchik-Provalinskaya, Ellina Zvereva and Romuald Klim, was fi rst held in 2008.

Our Olympic team was then enriched by such names as Oksana Menkova and Gennady Avdeenko.

At present, athletes compete in seven events: for women, the 100m and 400m steeplechase, shot-putt, hammer and discus and, for men, the hammer and high jump. Interestingly, four of the seven champions mentioned can now participate in tournaments as they are acting sportsmen. However, only 2000 Sydney Olympics shot-putt medallist Yanina Karolchik-Provalinskaya accepted the challenge, proving her life-long sporting spirit.

The tournament was not easy for her, with heavy rain in Minsk creating a number of problems for hammer, discus and javelin throwing. Staiki Sports Complex postponed the events by two hours while Dynamo Stadium, where the running, jumping events and shot-putt were held, was in no better condition. Luckily, the sun soon reappeared.

Ms. Karolchik-Provalinskaya actually won her event and produced the sixth best world result to date — 19.95m. Aft erwards, she noted that this was the mark she’d aimed for and that she was extremely happy. Runners aged 4-6 took part in an 8×50m relay for the first time at Dynamo Stadium, with small prizes given to the youngsters.

After this entertaining warm-up, our athletes are preparing for the Belarusian Championship, to be held in Grodno in late June. Th is is followed by the European Championship in Barcelona, the main track and field start of the season.

Another crop of medals

At the last — third — World Cup round, our Belarusian rowers were true to themselves, claiming a complete collection of medals

By Yuri Karpenko

This time their ‘crop’ comprised one gold, two silver and three bronze medals, even though our leading canoeists were absent in Germany’s Duisburg.

Previously, in Hungary’s Szeged, our kayak leaders had been missing. Germany saw our women’s kayak four take third place in the 500m, despite having only re-joined the world spotlight recently.

Reaching the World Cup finals in this ‘Olympic race’ and then claiming bronze is a major breakthrough.

In the 1,000m, the men’s kayak team status as favourites was confirmed by Olympic champions Alexey Abalmasov, Roman Petrushenko, Vadim Makhnev and Artur Litvinchuk, who beat athletes from Australia and Germany.

Petrushenko and Makhnev also came second in the sprint (a new ‘Olympic’ event) and in the 500m. Bronze in the latter also went to two Belarusians — Stanislav Strelchenko and Sergey Findyukevich — who left behind many formidable rivals.

Oleg Yurenya again proved why he’s being called the revelation of the season, having won silver in the 1,000m in the initial round in Vichy. Disproving rumours of his success being a ‘fluke’, he stormed the water in Szeged to win gold but, in Germany, lost in the finals to German Max Hoff and to Adam van Koeverden.

However, few novices can boast such high achievements. Based on the results of the World Cup starts, where points are earned only from Olympicranked races, Yurenya is in the lead. The final rankings will be released after the World Championship, to be held in Poznan.
